Strategic
When IT should drive planning—not just close tickets
What Strategic is for
Strategic is a vCIO retainer. It is technology leadership — roadmap, governance, budget and vendor strategy — for organisations that need those decisions made well but cannot justify a full-time CIO.
It is important to be clear about what this is not: Strategic is not a managed services tier and does not include day-to-day support. It layers on top of a managed tier, most often Growth or Business, or alongside an internal IT team that runs operations competently but has nobody setting three-year direction.
The work is decision-shaped rather than ticket-shaped. Where should the next $200,000 of technology spend go, and what does it buy? Which of these four vendor relationships is actually working? What does the board need to hear about cyber risk, in language that survives contact with a non-technical audience? Quarterly steering sessions produce documented decisions with owners, and we follow through on them.
What changes for you
Technology spend has a thesis
Investment gets sequenced against business outcomes instead of arriving as a series of unrelated requests.
The board conversation gets easier
Risk and resilience explained in terms a non-technical director can act on, prepared before the meeting rather than during it.
Decisions stop being relitigated
Documented decision records with owners mean last year's choices do not get reopened every time someone new joins.
What's included
Grouped by what it does for the business, rather than by the tools behind it.
Roadmap and planning
- Multi-year technology roadmaps tied to measurable business outcomes
- Fiscal-year planning aligned to your budget cycle, not ours
- Sequencing that accounts for dependency and disruption, not just cost
Governance
- IT policies and standards with executive sponsorship
- Risk prioritisation framed in business impact terms
- Documented decision records so choices survive staff turnover
Budget and vendors
- Budgeting support and investment cases finance will accept
- Vendor strategy and consolidation analysis
- Licence optimisation — most organisations at this size are paying for shelfware
Programme oversight
- Oversight for migrations and major initiatives
- M&A technology integration planning and carve-out support
- Security and compliance programme alignment — operational support for your frameworks, not attestation
Executive communication
- Board- and executive-ready narratives on risk, resilience and investment tradeoffs
- Quarterly steering sessions with documented decisions and follow-through accountability
- Coordination with Assurance or project SOWs when regulated or multi-site work is in scope
What Strategic does not include
Worth knowing before a call rather than after one.
- Not a support contract. Strategic includes no helpdesk, monitoring or patching.
- Designed to layer on a managed tier or alongside a competent internal IT function.
- We support your compliance programme operationally; we do not attest or certify.
- Project execution is scoped separately — Strategic provides the oversight, not the delivery hours.
Questions about Strategic
- Only if operations are genuinely covered — either by an internal team or another provider. A roadmap is worth very little on top of an environment nobody is maintaining, and we would rather say that up front than take the retainer.
- Growth's QBRs look back at the last quarter and set the next one. Strategic looks out two to three years, owns the budget conversation with finance, and produces material intended for a board. Different horizon and a different audience.
- Your leadership — typically the owner or CEO, finance, and whoever owns operations. The value is in the decisions being made in the room by people who can commit to them, not in a report being delivered.
- Then you should, and we will hand over cleanly. The documented roadmap, decision records and vendor analysis are yours. A vCIO retainer that makes itself hard to leave is not a retainer worth having.
